Sailfish Upended In SSC Quarterfinals

BRADENTON, Fla. – Just days after defeating Embry-Riddle to close out the regular season the Palm Beach Atlantic men's tennis team failed to repeat that result, falling to the Eagles 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. This year's event is being held at IMG Academy.

PBA (15-9) was able to take two of the three doubles matches in the previous meeting, but on Thursday the 'Fish struggled. At No. 1 the Eagles' duo of Rodolfo Arreygue and Andres Donayre defeated PBA's Pato Zarazua and Pietro de Silva 8-1.

At No. 2 Philipp Hoffmann and Bernardo Ferreira were unable to repeat their dominance, falling to Juan Ortiz Couder and Lucas Bos 8-4. At No. 3 doubles Rodolfo Hasegawa and Thomas Salmon had the best showing but lost 8-6 to Mickael Faucher and Deepak Vishavkarma.

The only two singles matches to be completed came at No. 1 and 2 as PBA's Zarazua and Hoffmann both lost in straight sets. Zarazua fell to Ortiz Couder 6-2, 6-1 while Hoffmann lost 6-1, 6-1 to Donayre. The other four singles matches were unfinished in the middle of the second set. PBA only won one first set, as Hasegawa took the first set from Vishavkarma at No. 3, 6-1.

The Sailfish will now await their NCAA Tournament fate. The Sailfish were ranked No. 6 in the latest regional poll with Embry-Riddle No. 7. Eight teams will make the field including an automatic bid to three conference champions and five at-large selections. The Selection Show is scheduled for Tuesday at 8 p.m.
