MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- After a tough one-run loss in Wednesday’s double-header opener at Barry University, the Palm Beach Atlantic softball team was unable to fight back and earn a split as the No. 13-ranked Buccaneers produced a 3-2 game one win followed by a 6-3 game two victory. The sweep is the second straight for the Sailfish who are now 13-10 on the season.
The team won’t have to wait long to potentially get back in the win column as Palm Beach Atlantic will host Mercyhurst College on Thursday at 5 pm for a double-header at the Lake Catherine Sportsplex.
Junior right-hander Mary Pippin (8-6) took on veteran BU left-hander Brianna Smith (7-2) in the opener at Buccaneer field with each hurler leaving their team in position to claim a victory.
The Bucs (15-3) would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as Cassy Zamora led off with a bunt single and then moved ahead into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. A sac fly later in the inning by Sarah Broseker pushed across the first run while an infield single by Grace Collins preceded an Alyssa Goldsmith RBI double.
Palm Beach Atlantic fought back quickly however with two runs in the top of the fourth inning as senior Mari Stokes delivered a run-scoring single to plate Kara Anderson while Stokes came around later in the frame on BU throwing error.
The deciding run came for Barry in the bottom of the fifth inning as Goldsmith produced a run-scoring single to plate Broseker who reached on an error by Pippin earlier in the inning.
Smith held off the PBA efforts for a game-tying run as she went the distance and allowed only five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out five and walking none.
Pippin took the loss while allowing six hits and three runs (zero earned) while walking one and striking out three batters.
Stokes finished 2-for-3 at the plate for PBA as the Fish finished with five hits.
The second game saw a Lauren Bubeck versus Alexis Yohe matchup in the pitching circle. Both pitchers would go the distance with Yohe earning her sixth win of the season and Bubeck dropping to 3-3.
Both teams would register eight hits apiece but two Sailfish errors along with the timely BU hitting earned the Bucs a 6-3 win and a double-header sweep.
Barry jumped in front 4-0 with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings.
Palm Beach Atlantic got back in the ballgame with a three-spot in the fifth inning as Erica Walters delivered an RBI while Camile Benito came through with a two-run single to cut the BU lead to 4-3.
The Bucs would add single runs in the fifth and sixth innings however to add a few key insurance runs.
Bubeck allowed eight hits and six runs (five earned) while walking two and striking out one. Yohe managed five strikeouts and walked three in victory.
Anderson and Miranda Welch each finished with two hits as did Benito who drove in two runs.
Barry was paced by Natalia Ojeda who had two hits in three at-bats.
